Ruby – The King of Gemstones

For thousands of years, Ruby has been considered one of the most valuable gemstones in the world. “Ratnaraj” - the Sanskrit word for Ruby translates close to “the king of the gemstones.” Ruby is unique in the sense that it possesses a remarkable unmistakable color, superior hardness and rarity. In fact, premium quality Rubies larger than 3 Ct., are extremely rare. Rubies are quite versatile and durable gemstones. In their toughness, Rubies are only second to Diamonds. It is because of these characteristics, large Rubies often rival Diamonds in terms of their value.

For centuries, Southeast Asian countries such as India, Burma (Myanmar), Vietnam, and Thailand have been the birthplace of Rubies. As the old Asian mines depleted, modern day production has expanded greatly and now includes countries of Central Asia and East Africa.  Interestingly enough, different countries of origin produce Rubies with varying tints of red from vivid red to a slightly bluish shade of red.

Ruby’s appeal has everything to do with its distinctive Ruby-red color. This color is best associated with fire and blood, implying warmth and life for mankind. Ruby-red also represents love in its most primal, passionate and even irrational form, which understandably appeals to individuals in love. Unlike in a Diamond, inclusions inside a Ruby generally do not diminish its value as long as it does not interfere with its transparency.

Ruby’s romantic association makes it a great gift as a show of love and deep sympathy. In trying to WOW your significant other, give a wonderful piece of Ruby jewelry during the month of July.
